Do they go to church for Trinity? Do's and Don'ts for Trinity

Long before the advent of Christianity, Slavic peoples celebrated Green Week. It marked the end of spring and the beginning of summer. To this day, some pagan rituals and fortune telling have been preserved, which are carried out on the holiday of the Trinity. The customs of ancient times are based on the renewal of life - this is the time when the first leaves appear on the trees and flowers bloom. And for the holiday of Trinity, churches and houses were decorated with greenery - a symbol of the growth and renewal of the Christian faith.

Trinity or Pentecost?

The Feast of Trinity is one of the most beautiful holidays in Orthodoxy. It always falls at a time when the first leaves on the trees begin to bloom. Therefore, on this holiday, people decorate houses and churches with green branches of birch, maple, and rowan.

Trinity Sunday does not have a fixed date of celebration. It is scheduled for the fiftieth day after Easter. The Bible says that it was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The disciples received the ability to preach the word of Christ. Therefore, this holiday is otherwise called Pentecost or the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Only in the 14th century did they begin to celebrate the Trinity holiday in Rus'. The customs and traditions on this day have been observed since ancient times. The founder of the holiday was St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Old Testament holiday

Pentecost is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated on the 50th day after. According to legend, on this day the people of Israel received the Law of Sinai. Traditionally, in honor of the celebration, entertainment for the people, mass celebrations, and sacrifices are organized.

He did not give the Law of God to his people. This happened on the fiftieth day after the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Since then, Pentecost (or Shavuot) began to be celebrated every year. In Israel, on the same day, the festival of the first harvest and fruits is celebrated.

When did the Trinity appear in Christianity? The customs and traditions of the celebration originate from the Old Testament Pentecost.

Orthodox holiday

The apostles retired to celebrate the Jewish Pentecost. The Savior, before his martyrdom, promised them a miracle - the coming of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, every day they gathered in one of the Zion upper rooms.

On the 50th day after the Resurrection, they heard a noise that filled the small space of the house. Flames appeared and the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. He showed them three hypostases - God the Father (Divine Mind), God the Son (Divine Word), God the Spirit (Holy Spirit). This trinity is the basis of Christianity, on which the Christian faith firmly stands.

People who were not far from the upper room heard a strange noise - the apostles were speaking in different languages. Jesus' disciples received amazing abilities - to heal, prophesy and preach in different dialects, which allowed them to carry the word of God to all corners of the world. The apostles visited the Middle East, India, and Asia Minor. We visited Crimea and Kyiv. All the disciples, except John, suffered martyrdom - they were executed by opponents of Christianity.

There is only one God. The customs of the church holiday began in the morning. The whole family went to church for worship. After which people returned home. They held a gala dinner, went to visit, congratulated friends on the bright holiday, and gave gifts.

Slavic holiday

In our country, the holiday of the Trinity began to be celebrated only 300 years after the baptism of Rus'. Before this, the Slavs were pagans. But even today there are rituals and signs that originated in those times.

Before Trinity, this day was considered the border between spring and summer. Its name is Semik (Green Week), or Triglav. According to pagan religion, three deities ruled all humanity - Perun, Svarog, Svyatovit. The latter is the keeper of light and human energy. Perun is the defender of truth and warriors. Svarog is the creator of the Universe.

In Semik, people held merry celebrations and danced in circles. Houses were first decorated with greenery, from which medicinal tinctures and decoctions were then prepared.

Thus, from the pagan celebration, a church holiday arose - Trinity. The customs and signs of those ancient times are still relevant among the people. For example, the greenery that was used to decorate the church on Pentecost was taken home and dried. It was sewn into canvas bags. This sachet served as a talisman for the home.

Celebration traditions

How is the holiday of Trinity? The customs of most holidays begin with cleaning the house. Only after the room was sparkling clean did the women decorate the rooms with green branches and flowers. They are a symbol of fertility and wealth.

The housewives prepared the festive table - they cooked pies and gingerbreads, cooked jelly. There is no fasting on this day, so Orthodox Christians are allowed any food. In churches, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated on Trinity Sunday, and immediately after it, the evening liturgy. During it, kneeling prayers are read. The clergy ask for the granting of grace to all those present, for the sending of wisdom and reason to the believers.

After the service, people sit down at the festive table, invite guests, give gifts and congratulate each other. According to tradition, it was customary to get married on this day. It was believed that if the matchmaking took place on Trinity and the wedding on Pokrov, a happy life awaited the young family.

How is Trinity celebrated in other parts of the world? Traditions, customs, and rituals from different countries are united by festive services. And in England, religious processions are even held on this day. In Italy, rose petals are scattered from under the ceiling of a church. In France, trumpets are blown during worship, which symbolizes the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Folk customs for Trinity

According to folk legends, mermaids wake up on Pentecost. In this regard, the villagers have several customs.

  • In the villages they made a stuffed mermaid and danced around it during festivities. Then it was torn into small pieces and scattered across the field.
  • Before going to bed, women ran through the village with a broom to protect themselves from mermaids.
  • One girl was dressed as a mermaid, taken to a field and thrown into a grain harvest. After which everyone fled to their homes.

What other folk practices are the Trinity famous for? Traditions, customs, rituals consisted of driving away evil spirits from the gates of the house. According to legend, on this day the merman woke up, and the villagers burned fires along the shore to ward off evil spirits.

Much attention was paid to decorating the house. Only branches of maple, birch, rowan, and oak could protect people and give them strength and health.

Another custom was to water the branches and flowers that were in the temple with your tears. Girls and women tried to cry harder so that drops of tears would fall on the greenery. This method helped the ancestors get rid of the summer drought and autumn crop failure.

First day

All festive events were divided into 3 days. The first was called Green Sunday. On this day, icons were decorated with birch branches, and a special prayer was said for Trinity.

Folk festivities were held in forests and fields. People danced, played, and sang songs. The girls wove wreaths and lowered them down the river. Such fortune-telling helped to find out what fate awaited in the coming year.

People remembered their deceased relatives. In the cemetery they swept crosses and monuments with a birch broom to ward off evil spirits. They left treats for the deceased at the graves. That night, according to folk tales, people had prophetic dreams.

Second day

Feast Monday is the second day of the celebration of Pentecost. People were rushing to church in the morning. After the service, the priests walked through the fields with blessings. This was done in order to protect the crop from drought, rain and hail.

The third day

Girls celebrate God's Day most of all. They organize celebrations, games, and fortune telling. According to folk tradition, a fun activity is held - “Drive Poplar”. The most beautiful girl was dressed up, decorated with greenery and wreaths - she played the role of Poplar. Then the youth took Topolya home, and each owner gave her a delicious treat or gift.

Holiday symbol

There is still a ritual of curling a birch tree. During the process, the girls wished good health to their mother and other relatives. Or, while curling the birch tree, they thought about the young man they loved - thus tying his thoughts and thoughts to themselves.

During the festivities, a small birch tree was decorated with ribbons and flowers were flown into it. After round dance chants, they cut it down and began a triumphal procession through the village. An elegant birch tree was carried around the entire village, attracting good luck to its residents.

In the evening, the ribbons were removed from the tree and a traditional sacrifice was performed. The branches were “buried” in the field, and the birch itself was drowned in a pond. So people asked for a bountiful harvest and protection from the spirits.

Early dew was collected on Trinity Sunday - it was considered a strong medicine against illnesses and illnesses. Such rituals existed among our ancestors. Some of them can still be found today. What can't you do on Trinity Sunday?

One of the main Christian holidays - Trinity Day in 2018 is celebrated on May 27 - the Orthodox Church on this day remembers the gospel event - the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, which is described in one of the books of the New Testament.

The holiday does not have a specific date in the church calendar, as it is tied to the day of Easter - it is celebrated on the 50th day after the Holy Resurrection of Christ.

Sputnik Georgia asked what signs are associated with the Day of the Holy Trinity, what can and cannot be done on this great holiday, which has one day of pre-celebration and six days of post-celebration.

Those who do not follow old customs and violate prohibitions, according to beliefs, can suffer significant damage. So, for example, for those who plow, their livestock may die; for those who sow, hail may destroy their crops. And for those who spin wool, their sheep will get lost and so on.

These days you can prepare food for the holiday table and feed and water livestock and pets. On the holiday, the whole family decorates the house with branches of various trees, flowers and greenery, blessed in the church.

The Feast of the Holy Trinity always falls on Sunday - on this day, believers try to attend the festive service in the church in the morning, partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ and devote time to prayer.

Is it possible to work for Trinity?

In the old days, on the days of great holidays, people always tried to put off all their work, believing that this was displeasing to the Lord, since work, as a rule, did not go well and did not bring a positive result.

The priests explain that by working on Trinity Day, we seem to show God our disrespect, therefore, if possible, on the days of major holidays, such as Trinity, it is better to postpone all matters, including work in the garden.

Of course, there are especially important tasks that cannot be postponed to another day, but it is better to start doing them only after attending the service and praying.

In addition, in the modern world there are many jobs that must be done daily, without breaks or weekends, so if a believer cannot visit the temple, he can pray at home or at work.

Is it possible to swim on Trinity Sunday?

During the holiday, people also refrained from swimming in the house - they tried not to go close to the water, even just to wash themselves.

Church officials claim that there is and cannot be any reason not to allow swimming on Trinity Sunday. You just shouldn’t replace going to church and prayer with a beach holiday, which will certainly be a sin.

You can go into nature after the service, especially since Trinity always falls at the end of May or beginning of June, when the weather is hot.

What else can't be done

It was forbidden to hold weddings and celebrate weddings on Trinity Sunday, but matchmaking on this holiday was considered a favorable omen - the life together would be long and happy.

It was also forbidden to go to the forest on Holy Trinity. In the old days, they believed that goblins and mavkas (evil forest spirits) watched over people there, lured them deep into the forest and tickled them to death. But the girls who wanted to find out their future, breaking the ban, still ran through the forest to tell fortunes for their betrothed.

Customs and signs

The week before Trinity is called Green - during the week the girls weave wreaths for all family members and bring them home. If the wreath has not withered by Trinity, it means that the person will live happily ever after.

On Trinity, it was customary to decorate rooms with flowers, young grass and green branches, which symbolizes prosperity and continuation of life. For this they used branches of birch, rowan, maple, mint, lemon balm - people believed that the more greenery there was in the house on Trinity, the happier the house would be.

In the church, during the service, herbs and bouquets of wild flowers were blessed, which were dried and stored for a whole year as a talisman against the evil eye. After the festive morning service, the site and the house were blessed with holy water in order to ward off otherworldly forces.

Since ancient times, a cheerful feast was organized - close people and relatives were invited to a festive dinner, who were treated to the Trinity loaf, egg dishes, pancakes, pies, and jelly. They gave each other funny gifts.

Rusks from the Trinity loaf were kept to be added to the wedding cake of the newlyweds as a sign of happiness and love.

On Trinity, it is useful to walk barefoot on the grass, collect and dry medicinal plants (thyme, mint, lemon balm), which are subsequently used as medicine. Since ancient times, people believed that on this day earth and greenery have special healing powers.

On Trinity and the following days they always wore their cross as a talisman that would protect them from otherworldly creatures.

Among girls, floating a woven wreath was considered an important custom. If the wreath floated far away, then you can prepare for the wedding; if it drowns, then there will be trouble, and if it lands on the shore, then she will have to wait a long time for marriage. And in order to see your betrothed in a dream, you had to put birch branches under your pillow.

On Trinity, you cannot follow common signs and superstitions, many of which give advice on what you supposedly “cannot” do on Trinity (swimming, going to the forest and field, working, etc.).

First of all, you need to live this day as a Christian - go to church, pray, take communion, try to be kind and attentive to your loved ones, spend free time with them.

For a Christian there are no prohibitions on certain types of activities on an ordinary or holiday day, if they do not harm his soul. Neither swimming, nor walking, nor work will interfere with a believer if he remembers God.

On Trinity Sunday, every believer tries to visit the temple, where on this day after the Liturgy special kneeling prayers are read for the forgiveness of sins, the mercy of God and the bestowal of the grace of the Holy Spirit. But a Christian can only preserve and increase this grace in his life by following the Gospel and not superstitious rules.

And most importantly, not only on the Holy Trinity, but also on any other day, you cannot keep negative thoughts in yourself, do not wish bad things on anyone, forgive your family and friends all the insults, get over them and leave them in the past, so that you can find peace mentally and physically.

Trinity Day is one of the twelve most important holidays in Orthodoxy. . The date of this holiday is “floating”, that is, it changes annually. Trinity is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter. What kind of holiday is this, how you should behave on this day and why it has a double name, read in our regular “Question-Answer” column.

What is the correct name: Trinity or Pentecost?

In fact, it is correct to call it both. The fact is that, according to the teachings of the church, God has three hypostases: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - hence the name of the holiday Trinity.

This holiday is called Pentecost because it falls on the 50th day from the Resurrection of Christ.

How did the holiday of the Holy Trinity come about?

The Feast of the Holy Trinity has been celebrated since 381. It was then that the doctrine of three hypostases of God was approved at the Constantinople Church Council: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. On this same day the fullness of the Holy Trinity was also revealed.

As the Gospel says, after the Resurrection, Jesus Christ promised his disciples that he would send them a comforter from his Father - the Holy Spirit. After Jesus Christ went to his Father, his disciples gathered daily in a hut on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, prayed and read the Holy Scriptures.

On the 50th day after the Resurrection of Christ, a strong roar was suddenly heard during the day, and tongues of fire appeared in the air. The fire swept over the heads of the apostles and penetrated into them. And suddenly they all began to understand and speak languages that they did not know before.

That is, the Holy Spirit descended to the disciples of Jesus in the form of fire and gave them the ability to speak any language in the world so that they could bring a new faith to every corner of the planet.

That is why Trinity for Christians is a holiday, which is also called the birthday of the Church. From this moment on, the Church begins to spread throughout the world.

How is Trinity celebrated?

On Trinity, it is customary to weave wreaths of herbs and flowers and decorate houses. The floors in the temple are lined with field herbs and birch branches; there are flowers in vases, which are considered a symbol of the renewal of people thanks to the Holy Spirit. Priests wear green robes on Trinity Sunday.

On the eve of Holy Trinity Day, an all-night vigil is held in churches. On Sunday, a liturgy is held, followed by Vespers, where the descent of the Holy Spirit is celebrated and three prayers are read with kneeling.

On Trinity Saturday, which is parental Saturday, it is customary to remember deceased relatives. The most important part of the commemoration takes place on Saturday morning during the Divine Liturgy, after which a general memorial service is served. After a morning trip to the temple, it is customary to visit the graves of departed relatives and friends.

On Trinity Day, fasting is not observed and any food is allowed. It is believed that on Trinity you cannot sew, clean the house, do agricultural work, swim or get a haircut. But the clergy note that all this is fiction and there are no prohibitions in this regard.

Trinity Day is one of the most beloved holidays among Orthodox Christians. Spend this day correctly so that there is no place for negativity and troubles in your life.

The annual celebration takes place fifty days after Easter, so the dates vary. In 2018, Trinity falls on May 27th. On this day, the Church remembers one of the key events in the history of the Christian religion - the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, disciples of Christ. This event was predicted by Jesus and happened ten days after his ascension into Heaven. The apostles heard a noise, and then the Holy Spirit descended on them in the form of a powerful flame. After this, each apostle was able to understand all the languages of the world, and therefore, preach Christianity everywhere, attracting people to the true faith and bringing them deliverance from sin.

In Rus' they began to celebrate Trinity three hundred years after Epiphany. This holiday is still one of the most beloved. It carries within itself many signs and rituals that we inherited from our ancestors. The holiday has many rules and prohibitions - both church and folk. Following these traditions will help you avoid negativity.

What you are allowed to do on May 27

Preparations for the holiday begin in advance. Housewives put their home in order, carry out general cleaning and get rid of old trash that prevents positive energy from entering the house. Before starting cleaning, it is customary to pray to the Higher Powers and ask for their blessing to begin the work. On the same day, the preparation of holiday treats begins, with baking playing a key role.

For the holiday, houses are decorated with freshly cut tree branches: maple, birch, rowan.

The green color of plucked branches is considered a symbol of rebirth and renewal, as each year the trees shed their old foliage to begin the growth cycle anew in the spring. In churches, clergy conduct services in green vestments. It is a symbol of the creative power of the Holy Spirit, which has the ability to improve everyone's life. Churches and temples traditionally have their floors covered with freshly cut grass.

According to folk tradition, birch branches are brought to the service. During the service they are blessed and then taken into the house. It is believed that the branches are able to protect households from harm, protect the home from fires and other disasters.

On this holiday, all medicinal herbs have power, so it is worth renewing their reserves in order to be treated with herbal infusions during illnesses. Supplies need to be dried in the shade. This way they will retain all their beneficial properties until next year.

On Trinity Day, they always have a festive lunch, treat themselves to fresh pastries and thank the Lord for the abundance of food on the table. According to tradition, unmarried girls leave a piece of half-eaten pie and put it in a secluded place until they get married. This way they ensure themselves a decent and comfortable family future.

On the holiday, they always pray for people who passed away without a blessing, not by their own death. Suicides are also commemorated. The priests pray for all souls, helping them to cross into the Kingdom of Heaven.

The church does not approve of various rituals and fortune-telling, but folk traditions have not outlived their usefulness. On the day of the holiday, people often make fortunes about a quick marriage, performing beautiful rituals. For this, girls who dream of ending their free life and quickly becoming wives weave wreaths of wildflowers and then throw them into rivers. If the wreath floats back, then family life will have to wait. The lucky ones, whose wreaths were carried away by the current, tell fortunes in the evening about the name of their betrothed and try to see the face of their future spouse in a dream.

What not to do on Trinity

It is strictly forbidden to indulge in despondency, utter swear words, be offended and angry. These conditions are observed not only during Orthodox holidays, but also in everyday life. Give up any negative emotions and try to do as many good deeds as possible. Your kindness and sincere support will definitely return to your life and result in prosperity and good luck.

You cannot throw away tree branches that are brought into the house during the holiday. Several small branches are left next to the home iconostasis, and the rest are burned seven days after Trinity.

Physical labor is also prohibited during the holiday. It is believed that household chores and work distract from prayers, so put things off for another day and devote the holiday time to loved ones. Visit church and be sure to visit relatives to strengthen family ties.

Swimming in open water is prohibited on Trinity Sunday. According to popular belief, an unwary person can be dragged to the bottom by mermaids. Hiking in the forest is also not recommended. A goblin can confuse his tracks, and a person will wander around for a long time, unable to get home.

On the day of the holiday, you should not conduct a wedding ceremony if you do not want a difficult fate for yourself and your spouse. However, matchmaking on May 27 is a good sign. If on this day the parents of the bride and groom agree on the marriage of their children, the life of the lovers will be full of abundance and prosperity.

Folk signs are observed not only on holidays, but also in everyday life. Take note of the wisdom of our ancestors to avoid any troubles. Follow traditions, and then there will be no place for negativity in your life. We wish you a bright holiday and only positive emotions.

A few days before the start of the holiday, it is customary to put the house in order, get rid of everything unnecessary, take out the garbage and dirt. On the eve of Trinity, delicious dishes are prepared, among which homemade cakes occupy an important place. On the day of Trinity itself, the house was decorated with green young branches, wildflowers and shoots. They especially loved young branches of birch, maple, rowan and other trees. This is not surprising, because greenery is considered a symbol of rebirth, renewal of life. Even in church, priests dress in green robes. In Christianity, this color represents hope, the grace of the Holy Spirit and the rebirth of life. On Trinity Day, the floors of all churches are covered with fragrant greenery. It was popularly believed to have healing powers and promote good health and well-being.

According to tradition, when leaving the temple for Trinity, it is customary to take a few blades of grass home from the temple. Together with them, grace is brought from the temple, which is considered a powerful amulet against troubles, illnesses and family quarrels. According to popular beliefs, herbs picked on Pentecost are endowed with special healing powers. Therefore, on this day they collected medicinal plants, wove wreaths and brought beautiful bouquets to the house.

On Trinity Sunday they always prepared a festive table and baked goods. In the old days, there was a belief that the mother of an unmarried girl should hide and save a piece of freshly baked pie or pie until her daughter’s marriage, then her family life would be easy and happy.

On this day, the church allows people to read prayers for those who did not return home, went missing, or committed suicide. In the temple on this day, the priest reads prayers for the repose of the souls of all the dead, even suicides. At the same time, the church considers fortune telling on the Trinity to be a great sin, although people bypass this prohibition. According to tradition, on the Day of the Holy Spirit, girls wove beautiful wreaths of wildflowers, herbs, cornflowers and birch twigs and floated them down the river to find out their fate. If the wreath has landed on the shore, it means that changes in the fate of its owner will not happen soon.

What not to do on Trinity

In order not to anger the Holy Spirit, on this day it is strictly forbidden to quarrel, swear, get angry, envy and gloat, not to mention practicing black magic and witchcraft, especially causing damage. Otherwise, you can bring big disaster not only on yourself, but also on the whole family.

You cannot sin and engage in debauchery. It is believed that sinners can receive severe punishment if they do not follow the commandments of Christ. Therefore, on Trinity Sunday it is customary to perform charity, financially help relatives and those who need help, visit the sick, distribute old clothes and make gifts. On this day you should not engage in heavy physical work, especially work in the garden and field, digging up trees and agricultural labor.

According to tradition, the branches that decorate the house should never be thrown into the trash: after Trinity Week, all green decorations and herbs are burned. And flowers are used to make herbariums that protect the house from evil spirits.

It is not customary to swim on Trinity: there is a popular belief that on this day the unclean spirits that live in the water become especially active: mermen, mermaids and mermaids, who can destroy a person and take them with them. There are cases when even experienced fishermen and swimmers died on this day. You shouldn’t have a wedding on Trinity Sunday either: it is believed that marriage will be difficult and will bring nothing but troubles to the spouses. But matchmaking on Trinity Sunday, as people say, brings good luck and contributes to a happy life for the spouses.
